Our Story

The brand tarkiner has been created and sourced on the land of the peerapper people by the First Nations people of North West Tasmania. Named for the tarkiner people, it pays its respects to a people who were resilient, inclusive and honourable — all qualities the brand embodies and encourages.

tarkiner proudly owns and runs three different businesses: tarkiner indoor plant food, tarkiner tourism and the tarkiner centre of excellence.

tarkiner is supported by the Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation and the First Nations people of North West Tasmania.

Born in a home in the far North West Coast region of Tasmania, in a place where our roots are as deep as the tallest trees in the Tarkine, where we are bred to be as resilient as the waves that shape the coastline; tarkiner is more than a business for us. It is a way for us to share our Country and our culture. A way to create a proud and prosperous community. And a way to ensure that we have a future as long as our past.

our secret ingredient

For generation after generation, the people of the North West, including the peerapper people, have been harvesting wild Bull Kelp that washes ashore off the waters of the coast. It is part of who we are. Kelp is central to our culture, as resource used for food, tools and art. But while Kelp has been intertwined with our past, it is also entwined with our future, with tarkiner indoor plant food, tarkiner tourism and the tarkiner centre of excellence all having Kelp at their heart.

Kelp always was, always will be, good for the body and Country.

our country

Here, the second largest temperate rainforest in the world — the Tarkine — meets world-renowned surf beaches. Among all this, tarkiner finds its home. As you breathe in the cleanest air in the world, you’ll know, you’ll feel that this place is special. It’s wild and seemingly untouched, yet it has provided a home and the resources for generations to prosper.

our community

tarkiner is the brainchild of the Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation (CHAC), an inclusive organisation who — like tarkiner — aim to embrace culture to inspire and empower Aboriginal people. CHAC are a supportive body for the First Nations people in North West Tasmania. Alongside their services, they walk forward together with their community, growing in strength and in their culture. CHAC protect the histories, stories and culture of the nine tribes of the North West, including the tarkiner people. Their stories and culture guide the organisation’s direction, paving the way for the community. The tarkiner brand and businesses are central to that community as it continues on that path and into the future.
